    The severe winter of 2013-14 will go down as a test of resources for many governmental bodies.

    As reported in the Feb. 14 Pulse, the early and unrelenting winter conditions prevented county highway crews from erecting all the snow fences they could have put up, which caused more drifting on some roads.

  • Whitefish Dunes Beech Trees Coming Down

    In June 2008, the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources issued a report called “Preparing Wisconsin’s Forests for Beech Bark Disease.” At the time, the Beech scale, a tiny insect that feeds on the beech and allows a fatal fungus to collect in the wounds created by the insect, had not been found in Wisconsin.

    Voters delivered a big upset in the April 1 election, with Jacksonport farmer and town supervisor Randy Halstead in a landslide win over incumbent Dale Wiegand for the Door County Board of Supervisors District 16 position.

    During April, Scaturo’s Baking Co. & Cafe, located at 19 Green Bay Road on Sturgeon Bay’s west side, is partnering with United Way of Door County’s Treat of the Month campaign.

  • Five Courses of Beer and Food at Mojo Rosa’s

    United Way of Door County is the featured charity for a Beer Pairing Dinner at Mojo Rosa’s in Egg Harbor on April 25 from 5 to 9 pm. Mojo Rosa’s has partnered with Door County Brewing Company and Flanigan Distributing to create a menu that compliments their craft beers.

  • Outstanding Alcohol at DC Distillery

    Door County Distillery’s gin, Luminous vodka and single-malt whisky each earned a medal at this year’s San Francisco World Spirits Competition. The distillery’s gin and Luminous vodka were both named Double-Gold medal winners, while the single-malt whisky scored a silver medal.

    Peninsula Building Systems (PBS) of Sturgeon Bay received “Building of the Year” recognition from Wick Buildings for their work on the Agricultural Heritage & Resource Center in Kewaunee.

  • Island Native is Aboard Navy’s Newest Ship

    In his third tour of duty with the United States Navy, Washington Island native Daniel Oberg has landed an assignment aboard the new Littoral Combat Ship (LCS) USS Coronado, which will be commissioned in a ceremony at its home port of San Diego, Calif.

  • County Supports End to Gerrymandering

    The Door County Board of Supervisors is now on record in support of a nonpartisan redistricting system for Wisconsin.

    It was the second time the issue had come up, but at the January meeting, several board members said they did not have enough information on the subject, and one felt it was a purely partisan move.
