  • Cheers!: A Belgian Blend of Rood Brews

I was happy to see a bottle of Petrus on the shelf recently, even though I wasn’t familiar with this particular beer with the odd name Rood Bruin. Petrus is a line of sour ales from Brouwerij De Brabandere of Belgium. Rood Bruin is a blend of 67 percent young brown beer and 33 percent […]

    Cheers!: Such an Awesome Sauce

My daughter Clare, who lives in the Green Bay area, came for a visit recently bearing a sixer of Awesome Sauce from Stillmank Brewing of Green Bay. And, oddly enough, it was my first experience with Awesome Sauce. I assure you, it will not be my last. What a very yummy and refreshing beer. Owner/brewmaster […]

Cheers!: Off with My Head for Doubting All American IPAs

Anyone who reads this column regularly knows that I don’t have much love for American IPAs. English IPAs, yes. Overhopped American IPAs, no. But I wanted to challenge myself recently when I picked up a six-pack of Hopsecutioner IPA from Terrapin Beer Co. of Athens, Georgia. Brewed with six varieties of hops that register 71 […]

  • Beer Review, Hey Matilda, Jim Lundstrom

Cheers!: No Longer in Control, But Hey, Matilda!

“Hey-a, Ma-tildaMa-tildaMa-tildaShe take me moneyAnd run Ven-e-zuela.” Harry Belafonte first recorded the song “Matilda” as a single in 1953. It was a big hit. He re-recorded it for his second RCA Victor album in 1955, the year I was born. Why this song that I have not heard in many decades should enter my mind […]

  • Cheers, beer review, Jim Lundstrom, Orval Trappist

Cheers!: Celebrate Orval Trappist Ale on March 23

If you’ve ever heard the term “rocky head” associated with a beer, Orval Trappist Ale is the very definition of that term. It looks substantial enough to send an expeditionary force up to conquer it. The beer inside the unique, bowling pin-shaped bottle is the only beer made by the Cisterian monks at Abbaye Notre-Dame […]

  • Cheers!: Hey, Grandpa, Where You Goin’ with That Gun in Your Hand?

Of all the beer names I’ve run across in a long lifetime of drinking beer in different parts of the world, I do believe this one tops them all: Grandpa’s Got A Gun from O’so Brewing of Plover, Wis. What does that mean? Is it a warning? Look out – Grandpa’s got a gun, and […]

  • Old Chub, beer review, Jim Lundstrom

Is That a Soviet Satellite in My Scotch Ale?

“It’s like Sputnik.” Huh? I do not comprehend the meaning of that line, which is printed at the top of the can of Old Chub Scotch Ale that I’m drinking. It’s made by the Oskar Blues Brewery of “Colorado USA.” Sputnik, you will recall, was the Soviet satellite that spawned the dawn of the space […]

  • Cheers!: Gnomes to the Rescue!

La Chouffe. Gesundheit! Kidding! La Chouffe is my new favorite winter beer because it is so very malty, and the warming feeling of malty beer is just what a cold soul needs in the dead of a dead winter. A pal invited me over for a trio of delicious pizzas (my favorite was an alfredo […]

  • Cheers!: Brown, Brown, Go to Town

Hunting the beer aisles with nothing particular in mind might be the most difficult thing a person can do these days, but that was my dilemma on a recent Saturday afternoon. I saw this. I saw that. And then I saw this and that again. Everything looked enticing, but nothing was screaming, “Drink me!” and […]

  • Cheers!: Cold Stout Makes Me Pout

It’s the day after winter officially arrived, and there has been a definite bone-chilling coldness in the air. I reach into the magic fridge with the notion that I better find something appropriate right off the bat or I’m turning to brown liquor. To my great delight, I pulled out a a can of The […]

Cheers!: Cascades of Apricot in a Sour Blonde

Snow had been coming down all day, and continued into the night. I did some shoveling before it got dark and I guessed a foot of snow had already fallen. And still it came. I knew getting my car out in the morning was not going to be easy, but that’s not something I needed […]

  • Southern Tier Brewing, Cheers, Jim Lundstrom, Beer, beer review, Door County

    Cheers!: Overdosing on Cinnamon Roll

Disappointed last night by something calling itself a Scotch ale, tonight – an impossibly cold and rainy night – I reached deep into the magic fridge and hoped I would have better luck. And struck black gold in the form of a bottle of beer from Southern Tier Brewing of Lakewood, N.Y. This is a […]

  • Cheers, Stranger Than Fiction Porter, Collective Arts Brewing, Jim Lundstrom, Door County, Beer Review, beer

Cheers!: ‘I Hated You, I Loved You, Too’

It was a bone-chillingly cold January day on the peninsula. It had snowed overnight, but when I woke up it was raining and I had trouble getting up the hill I live on because of all the icy slop and had to let work know I couldn’t get there until the plow came through. Once […]

  • Cheers!: A Deep Dive Into the Black Forest

I was happy to become reacquainted with what used to be one of my favorite breweries – Unibroue of Montreal, Canada. They have always made amazing beers, but I somehow lost touch with them. And then I saw a bottle of Ale Gâteau Forêt-Noire. Well, I know the first word – ale. And being a […]

  • Bridge Up Brewing Adds to County’s Craft Beer Experience

Trent Snyder can’t wait for you to try his beer, and he really wants to know what you think. “If it was just for me, I’d brew IPA all day,” he said. “We want to see what people like. That’s our goal here, to brew for the people. We care about what people want to […]

  • Cheers!: An Embrace of Sour Blueberry Diversity

“The wind in the willow played Love’s sweet melody But all of those vows you made Were never to be Though we’re apart You’re part of me still For you were my thrill On Blueberry Hill” The lyrics to “Blueberry Hill” played in my head as I unlocked a bomber bottle of Cascade Brewing’s Blueberry […]

  • Eight Area Brewers Join in Wildfire Fundraiser with Resilience IPA

Eight breweries in northeastern Wisconsin banded together to brew an IPA to help California wildfire victims. • Clearing Class To Look at India Pale Ales

Paul Regnier recalls the bad old days when macrobreweries produced nothing but homogeneous American lagers, yet people still had allegiance to a beer brand. He said in the case of the crowd he rolled with as a young man, “You were either a Bud person or a Pabst person.” For the record, he was a […]
