  • Letter to the Editor: Have We Forgotten Our Door County History?

Eighty-five years ago on July 7, 1935, Door County held a centennial festival honoring Increase Claflin, Door County’s first pioneer, who settled here 100 years earlier, in the spring of 1835.  The celebration was held on the shore of Little Sturgeon Bay on the property owned by Charles Gustafson, who donated a small piece of […]

  • Letter to the Editor: Feel the Need to Cancel? It’s OK

The number of people searching for “coronavirus appointment cancel” has sharply increased, and it continues to rise, according to Google Trends.  Many salons are upping their sanitation practices in order to protect their clients. Many have posted requests that if you’ve been sick, please stay away. Probably a good measure. However, if we’re going to […]

  • Letter to the Editor: Don’t Equate Low Risk with Low Precaution

I was encouraged to see the leading article describing Door County’s take on COVID-19, but disheartened by the lack of proactive awareness with respect to precautionary measures of social distancing that was reported. As global and national news reports continue to communicate daily escalations, Door County appears relatively unconcerned. I’ve heard everything from “It’s just […]

  • Letter to the Editor: Endorsing Wotachek ‘Wholeheartedly’

Laura Vlies Wotachek is running for re-election as District 9 county supervisor, and I endorse her re-election wholeheartedly.  Laura and I first met on the set of a local film production more than five years ago, and we quickly became friends. Since then, we have worked together on other projects, including the Door County Fairest […]

  • Letter to the Editor: ‘Quite the Opposition’

“Quite the opposition” is the evaluation that Peter Hurth of Baudhuin Engineering made as the Door County RPC unanimously denied the CUP that the Margaret Dreutzer Trust applied for. In no particular order, and in hopes of recognizing everyone who worked to protect the quarry, thank you to: • The 250-plus people who sent letters in […]

  • Letter to the Editor: Money to the Rich

As one who truly detests how the airline industry treats travelers, I do not want the government giving them a dime of relief money. They have made millions of dollars while thumbing their noses at us, and now they are crying for a bailout. Give the money to the people who truly need to survive. […]

  • Letter to the Editor: Wotachek ‘Lives, Breathes and Believes in Door County’

With the upcoming elections, I want to share my experience regarding Laura Wotachek, who is running for re-election for the District 9 supervisor position. I am hopeful my personal experience with Laura will help you to determine whom to cast your vote for in the upcoming election.  Laura is relentless in making our community a […]

  • Letter to the Editor: Supporting Laura Vlies Wotachek

Samuelson’s Creek/White Birch Inn would like to go on record as supporting Laura Vlies Wotachek in her quest for reelection as county board supervisor in District 9. Since our reopening, she has been a great supporter of us and has brought us a lot of return business. As restaurant/hotel managers, we face a continuing struggle […]

  • Letter to the Editor: Supporting Wotachek for District 9 Supervisor

Laura Wotachek is a hardworking, passionate and honest mother, wife and student, which also makes her a great representative as Door County’s District 9 supervisor.  I have known Laura for more than 10 years. We were introduced at Mary’s School of Dance, and I soon became the childcare provider to her two girls. Not to […]

  • Letter to the Editor: Schuessler Lauds Wotachek’s Economic-Development Work

During my tenure as executive director for Door County Economic Development Corporation, I had an opportunity to work with a diverse group of elected officials. Many were selfless, mission-oriented and high-quality public servants. This is important because without good elected officials, it is impossible for economic-development corporations to achieve their mission.  One of those quality […]

  • Letter to the Editor: A Problem of Trust

At this writing – Friday, Feb. 28 – the Dow Jones Industrial Average is down more than 4,000 points for the week, more than 13 percent. This is due to fear associated with the coronavirus; there is no question about that. Some 35 percent of our population believes soundly in Trump, but the other 65 percent? Some […]

  • Letter to the Editor: Jill Karofsky for Wisconsin Supreme Court

We have a Wisconsin Supreme Court election coming up on Tuesday, April 7. This 10-year term will shape the future of Wisconsin, as the Wisconsin Supreme Court will likely hear cases about gerrymandering,  voting rights, women’s access to health care, the climate crisis and more. Judge Jill Karofsky is running to fill this seat. She […]

  • Letter to the Editor: Leave Stereotypes Out of Crisis

I commend this publication and the Door County Public Health Department for addressing the questions and concerns that many have about the recent coronavirus outbreak. Communication is an important first step in combating misinformation about the importance of recognizing symptoms of a virus and in strengthening the precautions county officials take to prevent any further […]

  • Letter to the Editor: Vigilance Urged in Water Quality Fight

We have been hearing a lot about soil-health management. Farmers are talking about cover crops, setbacks, no-till fields, just to name a few. What you have to understand is this: Building new topsoil will take hundreds of years. Some say more than 100 years per inch; others use a much longer time frame.  Either way, […]

  • Letter to the Editor: Are We Overtaxed?

Joel Kitchens, in his most recent newsletter, publicly stated that Wisconsinites are “overtaxed” and need a refund. Why do you think he makes that assertion?  If we are just going to give back the tax dollars the state collected without even considering how these public resources may benefit the common good of Wisconsinites, why do […]

  • Letter to the Editor: Against the Quarry RV Park

My husband and I have recently purchased land on Whitefish Bay Road and have followed the RV Quarry Village issue closely. I am recently retired, and we chose Sturgeon Bay and the area for its natural beauty and quiet atmosphere to build our home. My mother lived and had a business in Egg Harbor and […]

  • Letter to the Editor: White Supremacy on the Rise

A recent USA Today article, “White Supremacy Seeps into Public, Experts Warn,” raises concerns about the recent rise of the white-supremacy movement in the U.S. As a 66-year-old and an optimist at heart, it seemed that throughout my life, racism was becoming less of a problem, albeit very slowly.   Most people first noticed the backward […]

  • Letter to the Editor: Dan Kelly Is Not Right for Our Supreme Court

In 2016, Scott Walker appointed Dan Kelly – a lawyer with no judicial experience – to the Supreme Court. Kelly is not a conservative. He is a libertarian, as is the organization – the Wisconsin Institute for Law and Liberty – that he served as a legal adviser before his appointment.  As a justice, he has sided with […]

  • Letter to the Editor: Why Now, Republicans?

I get tired of the members of the Republican Legislature patting themselves on their backs for being so fiscally conservative.  You stole money from our schools, our teachers and our unions while Walker was in office. Now that elections are coming up, you are offering bribes. The $105 – which comes out to a whopping $8.75 […]

  • Letter to the Editor: Student-Loan Debt Crisis

The student-loan debt crisis in the United States grew twofold, from $675 million in 2009 to $1.52 trillion in 2019. This crisis has been caused by a combination of falling state funding for college and grant aid, coupled with skyrocketing college costs. The vast majority of student-loan debt is composed of federal loans that cannot […]
