  • Letter to the Editor: Trump Budget Reflects Values

Budgets are moral documents that reflect the values our country holds. This budget shows us the direction the Trump administration would head if he is re-elected. The newly proposed Trump-administration budget proposes $844 billion in spending taken from Medicaid funds. It advocates massive reductions in Medicare and Medicaid spending, leading to people being denied health […]

  • Letter to the Editor: We Cannot Suppress Our Memories of the Past Four Years

A common human reaction to traumatic stress is involuntary suppression of the event that caused it. For many of us, the election of Donald J. Trump was an event that caused a great deal of stress. It would be easy to suppress the memory of his time in office, but he reminds us every day […]

  • Letter to the Editor: Thoughts on Development

I’d like to add some thoughts to LaVonne Callsen’s letter in last week’s Pulse. Yes, many of us worked hard to accommodate the tourism needs and future. We didn’t plan to snap up every piece of “prime” real estate to develop. The thought of seeing people sunning themselves in downtown Egg Harbor is troubling – […]

  • Letter to the Editor: Who’s Actually in Control?

I was somewhat perplexed at Dale Logan’s valentine letter, “Will You Be Mine?” I got the feeling that he’s probably a very nice guy, and his heart’s in the right place. But he tells us that although we are in the middle of chaos, what with, “the killing of multitudes of innocent people – both […]

  • Letter to the Editor: Our Unresponsive State Legislature and the Minimum Wage

Our state Legislature has an agenda that doesn’t match what the Marquette Law School survey has documented that we Wisconsinites want: 72 percent want a nonpartisan redistricting commission to end gerrymandering; 80 percent want background checks for firearms purchasers; 57 percent want to ban assault weapons; 70 percent want Medicaid expansion; 55 percent want to […]

  • Letter to the Editor: Who Should Control Education

Education is not in the U.S. Constitution because the founders wanted most aspects of life to be managed by those who were closest to them, beginning with local government. Local and state government had the responsibility to ensure that differences were valued and each child had opportunities based on skill and ability. The shift to […]

  • Letter to the Editor: Will You Be Mine?

It’s the time of year when we think about spring, new life, affection and love. We share our feelings with people who are very special to us, and we make a gesture and maybe even a commitment to them. We give them gifts; we do extra things to try to make them happy and show […]

  • Letter to the Editor: We Must Vote Out a Dangerous President and His Allies

After Trump’s acquittal by the GOP Senate, Adam Schiff posed a hypothetical question: What if Trump would decide to sell Alaska to the Russians? Let’s take it one step further: What if Trump would decide to drop a nuclear bomb on North Korea and start a worldwide nuclear holocaust?  Trump will consider his acquittal as […]

  • Letter to the Editor: Is an RV Village a Good Investment for Door County?

Those who care about and govern Door County must study the economic future, including what drives the attitudes and purchase habits of younger generations. Current data do not indicate they will be purchasing 45-foot Class A motorhomes, which is what’s proposed for the project above the Old Quarry. Let’s look at demographic trends of the […]

  • Letter to the Editor: Let’s Help End Gerrymandering!

After each 10-year census, the legislative district lines are redrawn. Gerrymandering is the act of redrawing those lines in ways that favor one party, thereby undermining representative democracy. Americans of all political persuasions are fed up with gerrymandering. There is a growing nationwide movement to put the redrawing of voting maps into the hands of […]

  • Letter to the Editor: Supporting Jill Karofsky for Wisconsin Supreme Court

On Feb. 18, there will be a primary election for a justice on the Wisconsin Supreme Court. There are three candidates for this position. We are supporting Judge Jill Karofsky for this seat. The following are our reasons why. Judge Karofsky – prior to becoming a circuit court judge – worked as a deputy district attorney in […]

  • Letter to the Editor: Mike Bloomberg for President in 2020

It has been a discouraging week for those of us who want to defeat Donald Trump next November. Republican senators capitulated into denial, rationalization and fear during the impeachment trial. The Iowa results disappointed because the front runners cannot appeal to the general electorate, and the moderate candidates do not have the street-fighter mentality needed […]

  • Letter to the Editor: Draining the Swamp

In recent years, we’ve heard the expression “draining the swamp” a great deal in regard to politics in this country. The definition varies dramatically depending on which party is using it.   To Democrats, it refers to eliminating the outsized control that money from corporations and billionaires exert on political decisions. It’s kind of hard to […]

  • Letter to the Editor: Together We Can Become an Army

As the people went about their daily lives in the town of Brumadinho, they were completely unaware that the massive tailings dam at the mine was getting weaker every day. Then maybe just a small section started to fail, just a little. Then a little more gave way on the massive wall. That wall held […]

  • Letter to the Editor: All Must Participate in Reversing Climate Change

Many, many thanks to Solomon Lindenberg for his column discussing Greta Thunberg (“Greta Thunberg Isn’t Just an Activist – She’s a Role Model,” Jan. 17, 2020). His ardent defense of Thunberg’s importance in climate advocacy and his own clear grasp of the climate crisis that is upon us are valuable contributions to our public conversation. […]

  • Letter to Representative Joel Kitchens: AB-481 and AB-482 Amount to Financial Exploitation of Vulnerable Adults

As you know, I am an estate-plan attorney who has practiced in Door County for more than 40 years. I am a certified estate-plan specialist. I take great pride in the time and training I invest in estate-plan work for my clients, many of whom are retired and living in Door County. We take offense […]

  • Letter to the Editor: Door County Pride

Several years ago when I was on the Door County Chamber of Commerce board, we had an in-depth discussion about how we wanted and perceived the county to look in 10, 20, 30 years. We all came to the conclusion that we knew what we didn’t want it to look like! As our CEO stated, […]

  • Letter to the Editor: Fair Maps: One Chance Per Decade to Get Them Right

Here’s the thing about fair maps: We have only one chance in a decade to do it right. The 2020 census and redistricting are just around the corner. We have to act now to make sure there are fair voting maps for fair elections in Wisconsin for the next 10 years. A majority of citizens, […]

  • Letter to the Editor: Support the Clean Water Task Force’s Recommendations

Make one short phone call, or write one email to contact your Kewaunee County Board supervisor to ask him/her to vote for resolutions supporting the state’s Clean Water Task Force bills and recommendations. Our two state legislators sat on the task force. The upcoming spring may again be messy, wet and late, and numerous liquid-manure […]

  • Letter to the Editor: Thanks for Welcoming UW-Madison Nursing Students

Thank you to the Door County community from Door County Medical Center, the Department of Public Health, Sunshine House, the ADRC, Ascension Home Health, Scandia Village, the Northern Door Child Care Center, Door County EMS in Sister Bay and Washington Island, and the WICHP program for providing an excellent glimpse into rural community health for […]
