  • Letter to the Editor: Loving Our High School Home Construction Project Home

We want to express our gratitude for the craftmanship and expertise that went into the building of our new home. We are the proud owners of the home just completed as the High School Home Construction Project, a collaboration between the Door County Economic Development Corporation and the high schools in our area. Owning the […]

  • Letter to the Editor: Granary Could Be a Future Icon

The Teweles and Brandeis granary has been a part of the westside waterfront since 1901. In 2012 it was purchased by the city in a parcel and at the urging of city leaders and consultants was left standing though all other structures were demolished. It is too bad the granary was not maintained back then […]

  • Letter to the Editor: Egg Harbor Parking Problem Is Real

We read, with great interest, the article “Parking Woes Plague Popular Village.” We experienced the frustration of Main Street Market first hand Memorial Day Weekend. On Friday afternoon the streets around the Market and One Barrel were jammed. The parking lot at Main Street was packed. We just assumed it was because of a holiday […]

  • Letter to the Editor: Make Peace, Not War

A deepfelt thanks to Myles Dannhausen Jr., for sharing his mother’s family story that appeared in the May 24th edition. Entitled “The Hidden Casualties of War,” it brought home that in honoring our veterans on Memorial Day, Flag Day, Veteran’s Day or in the recent commemoration of the 75th anniversary of D-Day, we need to […]

  • Letter to the Editor: ‘Let’s Stop the Lip Service’ on Water Quality

Governor Evers declaration of 2019 being the “Year of clean drinking water in Wisconsin,” is of course reason for celebration and further emphasizes our water quality concerns statewide that have finally garnered the attention they deserve. From high nitrates, to manure tainted e-coli flowing from taps, to PFAS “forever chemicals”, Wisconsin’s water should be highlighted […]

  • Letter to the Editor: Thank You, ‘Peninsula Pulse’

For myself and the Door County community I want to give thanks for the Peninsula Pulse. This is a time when community newspapers are vanishing before our eyes. Big corporations which have bought them up are stripping them down to gaunt corpses. Community journalism was my profession for 30 years. I thought it a higher […]

  • Letter to the Editor: Women’s Rights vs. Human Rights

Regarding a previous letter titled “Let Roe v. Wade Stand,” the statement was made “this whole issue is merely an attempt to control women.” Killing female babies certainly controls them! Is it “Women’s Rights Issue?” If is a human rights issue on the same level as slavery was. Blacks were declared non persons. They were […]

  • Letter to the Editor: Circumstances of Conception

There is an aspect of the abortion debate that you rarely hear about. Less than 1 percent of abortions are done for victims of rape, incest or life of the mother, yet rape is used to justify legalizing abortion. The value of human life doesn’t change due to the circumstances of its conception. Attorney Rebecca […]

  • Letter to the Editor: ‘Pure Hypocrisy to Put on the Pro-Life Act’

Almost daily the subject of abortion makes the headlines and it has unfortunately become a political issue. The GOP by sponsoring legislation in opposition to abortion even though unnecessary has accomplished their goal of making themselves appear as the pro-life party. In Wisconsin the GOP sponsors a bill that offers no protections for life that […]

  • Letter to the Editor: From a Baileys Harbor Beach Baby

Every summer we hold our collective breath as we turn into the Baileys Harbor beach parking lot. Maybe this year the pristine sand we grew up with will be returned to its natural glory. But as the matted mess comes into view, our hopes are dashed again. My Scandinavian roots run deep in Baileys Harbor. […]

  • Letter to the Editor: Please Don’t Dump on Us!

Current plans are to create a garbage pile on the West Side of Sturgeon Bay. It stinks, it’s ugly and it’s worthless. Please, help preserve our lovely West Side! Over the gentle odors of fish and seaweed, pleasant odors associated with all waterfront communities, now drift the aromatic blends of rotting grain, animal urine, and […]

  • Letter to the Editor: Open Door Pride Committee Extends Thanks and Invitation

We want to extend a huge thank you to Sturgeon Bay Mayor David J. Ward, and to City Council members Helen Bacon, David Hayes, Dan Williams, Kelly Avenson, Gary Nault, Seth Wiederanders, and Kirsten Reeths for proclaiming June 16-22nd Open Door Pride Week. We are filled with pride for publicly receiving this Proclamation at the […]

  • Letter to the Editor: Legislators Don’t Rule My Body

For those of you who object, as I do, to the decision by (mostly male) legislators that they know better than I how best to take care of my physical health, I have a modest suggestion: every time you or a family member needs to make a dentist appointment, have an eye exam, get an […]

  • Letter to the Editor: Let’s End Gerrymandering in Wisconsin

Instead of being one of the most gerrymandered states in America, Wisconsin can become a role model for fair and nonpartisan voting maps. Right now, the main obstacle to fair redistricting in our state is our Republican led state Senate and Assembly. They created our gerrymandered voting districts, and now they are in court trying […]

  • Letter to the Editor: What the Governor Didn’t See

Sure, Gov. Tony Evers got a tour of a CAFO in Kewaunee County May 28 along with Joel Kitchens and other dignitaries, and they discussed digesters, cover crops, need for clear water and other good things. But what they experienced was a sanitized homogenized public relations event. Next time, take the governor to an experience […]

  • Leave the Cormorants on Hat Island

In response to an article in the Friday May 17, 2019 issue of this paper, titled “Egg Harbor Residents Grow Weary of Cormorant Cannons on Hat Island”: I don’t blame the Egg Harbor residents for their angst, nor do I understand the reasoning behind the disturbing action to remove the cormorants. Perhaps I’m wrong, but […]

  • All Human Life Needs Protection

I’d like to respond to some of the erroneous assumptions in last week’s letter “Let Roe v Wade Stand.” If the Roe v Wade decision were reversed, that wouldn’t make abortions illegal; it would merely give power back to the states. Abortion should not be a female vs. male political fight, because it’s a human […]

  • Time to Connect the Dots

The documentary film “We are Water” was recently shown as part of the Door County “Celebrate Water” series of events. As this excellent movie winds down, numerous tips or suggestions regarding personal water conservation roll down the screen. They range from turning off the water when you brush your teeth or shave, only running the […]

  • Boys & Girls Club Will Continue Its Progress

Dear Friends of the Boys & Girls Club of Door County, As many of you know, Julie Davis has led the Boys & Girls Club of Door County as executive director the past eight years, during which she has made a huge impact on the lives of countless children in our community. On May 24, […]

  • Letters to the Editor: Let Roe v. Wade Stand

The proposal of bills in several states, which ultimately may be challenged before the SCOTUS seeking to overturn Roe v. Wade has brought forth a firestorm of opinions, rhetoric and gross misstatements. It is an issue full of emotion, opinion, personal belief and not logic or science. What does it mean to call yourself Pro […]
