  • Eagle Tower Is Just 72 Inches Short of State Record

Eagle Tower should be restored, in a way that lives up to the expectations and pride that all the citizens of Door County deserve. After all, Door County citizens are contributing $750,000 towards the tower replacement, not to mention even more indirectly thru their matching taxpayer dollars. The Eagle Tower that was just removed, replaced […]

  • Letter to the Editor: Right Or Privilege?

In last week’s issue of this newspaper, Oct. 6, 2017, in the section that tells us what our various governmental representatives are up to, I learned that Senator Ron Johnson believes that food, shelter, and healthcare are privileges. He says that it’s government’s job to ensure an economy stable enough that people can afford these […]

  • Letter to the Editor: Better Design Needed

As I was reading the recent Pulse article about the three DNR concepts for a replacement tower at the park, what struck me were two things. First, all three concepts were ugly and way overbuilt for the spirit of the park. Second, the proposed costs were exorbitant when one considers the fiscal condition of both […]

  • Letter to the Editor: Attack Mode

Tom from Luxemburg observed that the “NorDor anti-Trump hate-mongers have been extremely active on the Pulse’s opinion page lately.” My observation is that they’ve been in “attack mode” since Nov. 6 last year and are actually slowing a bit. The Oct. 6 Pulse had only four of the standard “Hate President Trump” letters from the […]

  • Letter to the Editor: Save A Life

I have discovered another jewel of living in Door County. The Sister Bay/Liberty Grove Fire Department offers a class in CPR/AED (Automated External Defibrillator) training each month. I took the course last week and feel it was one of most rewarding things I have done in a long time. I learned a new skill and […]

  • Letter to the Editor: Children’s Zoos

We have all been to zoos that are designed to entertain children. Part of the format of these zoos is food for sale that you can buy for the children to throw to the animals. Have you ever thought of Puerto Rico as a huge children’s zoo? If you saw Trump being entertained by throwing […]

  • Letter to the Editor: The Best Approach for Outdoor Cats

Despite the fact that Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR) is the only humane and effective approach for outdoor cat populations, a Sept. 15 letter to the Pulse included several misconceptions about TNR and cats. First of all, it’s perfectly normal for cats to live outdoors. Only with the invention of kitty litter 70 years ago did it even […]

  • Letter to the Editor: Tax ‘Reform’

While our hearts must remain engaged with those who have experienced great losses in Texas, Florida, Puerto Rico and Las Vegas, we cannot afford to forget that the federal government will soon consider a massive reform of our system of taxation. Although I am committed to the idea that taxes ensure our opportunity to live […]

  • Letter to the Editor: Destroying Civilization

How can the people of the world and especially we Americans sit back and watch what is happening? We have two men, neither one of which for different reasons should be in the office they occupy, playing games that could result in destroying civilization. How can the people that we have elected to represent us […]

  • Letter to the Editor: Trump and the American Flag

The American Flag was originally designed to represent a country consisting of 13 states. It has been changed many times over the years as our country grew, by the U.S. Congress, to now represent a country of 50 states. The American Flag has maintained a great deal of continuity over the years, but there is […]

  • Letter to the Editor: We Owe It To Those Who Died and Their Families

There are countless mourners who are grieving and are left to learn to walk with the pain of their lost spouses, children, friends, co-workers and neighbors. But we can do more and they deserve our response. We can stand up and demand that our political representatives do everything they can to bring these violent gun […]

  • Letter to the Editor: School Boards Celebrate Wisconsin School Board Week

Door County School Districts are joining all public school districts across the state to celebrate Wisconsin School Board Week – Oct. 1-7 to honor our local board members for their commitment to our communities and their children. Strong schools make strong communities. These men and women devote countless hours to making sure our schools are […]

  • Letter to the Editor: Thank you, Sturgeon Bay!

As we near the end of “event season 2017,” the staff and board of directors of the Sturgeon Bay Visitor Center (SBVC), would like to say “thank you” to our community partners and the residents of Sturgeon Bay; a place that we’re lucky enough to call home. There’s truly nothing that we love more than […]

  • Letter to the Editor: ‘When Silence Is Betrayal’

I am proud to be an American. I don’t think we need to make America great again, though. I think its pretty darn good already. I also agree with the many silent readers out there who think that we should give #45 more credit for uniting the country. Think about how much he’s done to […]

  • Letter to the Editor: Plastics and Oil

By now we know that burning fossil fuel is affecting the atmosphere of the planet, with dire results of global warming and human death and dislocation. But we are only starting to know how deeply plastics and oil are intertwined in compromising our health and future. Plastics are byproducts of fossil fuels, and pervasive in […]

  • Letter to the Editor: These May Be Our ‘Good Old Days’

Wow! The NorDor anti-Trump hate-mongers have been extremely active on the Pulse’s opinion page lately. Apparently, President Trump made a huge mistake when he condemned violence by both left and right protesters, when the right answer was obviously to condemn only right-wing violence. Check out theses quotes: “rising fascism, ” “supporting racism and bigotry,” “supporting […]

  • Letter to the Editor: I’m Just Asking

We all have different ideas about the appropriate size and role of government. That is a good topic for conversation. No name calling, no yelling, just a thoughtful discussion and sharing of points of view. In some instances it is pretty clear what the role of government should be. Defense comes to mind. In other […]

  • Letter to the Editor: Honoring TAP’s Past, Present, Future

I would like to respond to both letters to the editor (Aug. 31 and Sept. 14) written concerning my Culture Club article on Aug. 25. The purpose of the article was to give an overview of the work James Valcq and I have done since arriving at TAP in the fall of 2011. Any mention […]

  • Letter to the Editor: Weidner’s ‘Pagel Paradox’

The paradox is this. How can an industrial “factory farmer,” dairy producer/owner/investor and industrial quantity liquid manure producer also be in charge of a county committee overseeing issues concerning protection of surface and ground water quality, and related public health and safety and non-farmer owned market property values, when this industrial production model has been […]

  • Letter to the Editor: Thanks for Participating in Safe Kids Day

On Aug. 19, 2017, Safe Kids Day Door County individuals, organizations and businesses shared health and safety tips at the 1st annual free and interactive event at the Door County Fairgrounds in Sturgeon Bay. Made possible by a Door County Public Health/ Wisconsin State Health Prevention grant, Safe Kids Day provided fun and informational tips […]
