The theme for the November 2011 issue of Verse Wisconsin Online is “Earthworks.” Co-Editors Sarah Busse and Wendy Vardaman seek poems “that move the earth, and move us as readers.”

Dickinson Poetry Series Features Michael Farmer
Michael Farmer of Baileys Harbor will be the featured poet in the UU Fellowship Dickinson Poetry Series on Wednesday, March 9 at 7 pm. His reading will conclude the 2010-2011 Emily Dickinson Poetry Series at the UU Fellowship.

A celebration of Door County’s first designated Poet Laureate, Frances May, will be held in her honor on Sunday, March 13 at 3 pm at the Miller Art Museum.

“Flat Stanley,” from Shawnee Mission, Kansas will be visiting the Forestville Branch of the Door County Library for the Stories and Fun session at 9:30 am on Friday, Feb. 25.

The Peninsula Art School in Fish Creek will present a lecture by Dr. Gratzia Villarroel as a part of Door County Reads on Thursday, Feb. 10 at 7 pm.

Young Poets Featured at Dickinson Series
Six accomplished Gibraltar High School poets will read their poetry on Wednesday, Feb. 9 at 7 pm at the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship in Ephraim. The young poets are multi-talented and involved in a variety of extra-curricular activities.

“The Cooking Mom” Signs Books in Baileys Harbor
Amy Hanten, host of Fox 11’s Living with Amy, recently launched her first cookbook called The Cooking Mom. Hanten will be at Novel Ideas Bookstore in Baileys Harbor on December 21 from 3 – 5 pm to sign copies of her cookbook.

Dickinson Poetry Event Highlights Caleb Whitney
Baileys Harbor firefighter, Caleb Whitney, will be the featured poet in the UU Fellowship’s Dickinson Poetry Series on Dec. 8 at 7 pm. Writing in isolation for more than 10 years, Whitney never really addressed any audience other than himself.

The Friends of Door County Libraries’ Holiday Book Sale will take place Saturday, Dec. 4 from 9:30 am – 2:30 pm at the Sturgeon Bay Library. This annual event will offer a range of gift-worthy books at nominal prices.

A “Door County Christmas” Authors Sign Books
Cupola House in Egg Harbor and Novel Ideas Bookstore in Baileys Harbor will host book signing events Nov. 12 and 14, respectively, for authors of A Door County Christmas – a collection of four novellas set among the villages and harbors of the Door Peninsula.

“I’ve been calling Frances [May] the ‘unofficial Poet Laureate’ for over 20 years,” said Door County author and artist Norbert Blei. “When they started talking about naming a Laureate, I thought, ‘the very first time goes to Frances; let’s do that, then officially open it to everyone.”
