“Preserving Foods Safely” is a hands-on educational workshop for beginning or experienced home canners. The program covers topics such as freezing, food dehydration, and canning, including hot water bath and pressure canning.

Visitors will have the chance to immerse themselves in Ephraim’s rich history on Friday, June 18, when the Ephraim Village Museums reopen for the summer season.

The Corner of the Past museum, operated by the Sister Bay Historical Society, will open for its 14th season on Saturday and Sunday, June 12 and 13. Docents will be available from 11 am – 3 pm every weekend through the end of June, when Friday hours will be added to the schedule.

The Clearing’s summer and fall one-, two-, and three-day Workshop Program catalog is now available. Classes include writing with Wisconsin author Jerry Apps and Wisconsin’s first poet laureate Ellen Kort.

Learning history will be especially entertaining for children and families at Ephraim Village Museums this season, as Bjorn, the new cartoon Draft Horse and mascot for the foundation’s children’s programming, will be a large presence – literally.

Roy Swanson will show a slideshow presentation at Base Camp Coffee Bar on June 2 at 6:30 pm. The slide show, “Gardens and Scarecrows,” is the story of Swanson’s time spent as the coordinator of the Community Garden Program for the city of San Francisco, California.

Lawrence University’s Bjِrklunden is offering diverse learning seminars set to take place at Bjِrklunden’s lodge, just south of Baileys Harbor. From Sunday, June 13 until Friday, June 18, “I and Thou” taught by Jay Brickman will explore the profound difference between treating another as a person or a thing by studying relationships depicted in the Bible.

In honor and celebration of the farmers, lumbermen, and fishermen who settled their families in the Township of Gibraltar over one hundred years ago, the Town of Gibraltar and the Gibraltar Historical Association will present the second annual Heritage Days.

The Door County Maritime Museum in Sturgeon Bay delves into the world of the paranormal with the opening of its new exhibit “Ghosts! Haunted Lighthouses of the Great Lakes.

The Door County Maritime Museum resumes tours of its popular in-water exhibit, the tug John Purves, with a daily slate of 40-minute, docent-led tours in May.

Most agree the impetus for the environmental movement was a book written by Rachel Carson, Silent Spring, later made into a movie of the same title. Silent Spring will be shown at the UU Fellowship’s Movies That Matter monthly series May 18, 7 pm.

Orchard Country Winery & Market will release in limited quantity, the third edition of their Door County Lighthouse Wine featuring Sherwood Point Lighthouse and artist Bridget Austin on May, 15, 10 am – 5 pm.

The Door County Historical Society is busy preparing the Historical Village at The Crossroads at Big Creek for the summer. They are looking for volunteers to interpret the village on Sunday afternoons and during special events.

The annual Groovin Sisterhood event in Sturgeon Bay, April 23 – 25, was a successful and groovy weekend. This year’s theme was Bahama Mamas Getaway by the Bay, where 270 ladies spent a whirlwind weekend enjoying a variety of classes and sessions, including a fashion show, comedy show, indoor beach party, and B&B tour.

Heritage Days 2010 will kick off a week of fun-filled activities with a dinner at the Gibraltar Grill June 6. Continuing throughout the week, special events include something for every member of the family: a sunset serenade, walking tours through Fish Creek’s historical village, an antiques road show, and dance at the firehouse.

On May 15 at 2 pm William Tishler will give the first presentation of 2010 for the Baileys Harbor Historical Society on the Frogtown Art Colony in Baileys Harbor, the subject of his next book, at Baileys Harbor Town Hall.

Astronomy Day 2010 comes to Sturgeon Bay on May 15. The Door Peninsula Astronomical Society wants to use this day to share the Astronomy Campus at Crossroads at Big Creek, which includes the Leif Everson Observatory, the Ray and Ruthie Stonecipher Astronomy Center and the StarGarden.

It’s big, it’s ugly, and it has sparked yet another border battle between Wisconsin and Illinois. The Asian Carp, an invasive species that typically grows to 12 – 15 pounds but can approach 100 pounds, has made its way up the Chicago Shipping and Sanitary Canal and near Lake Michigan.
