  • Letter to the Editor: Let’s Rebuild Faith in America

At 91, I have never been so disgusted with our representatives in Washington D.C. and Madison as I am now! Those brave and eloquent young students in Florida who are begging for some sign the adults in their government and country are willing to get behind them and do something positive and definitive following their […]

  • Letter to the Editor: What Happened to Us?

It is a puzzlement, what we expect from our young people. We want them to learn responsibility, yet we give them so little free rein. We want them to think for themselves, as long as they don’t stray too far from our own opinions. We want them to be respectful of their elders, yet what […]

  • Letter to the Editor: HELP of Door County Commends Door County Students

HELP of Door County commends and stands with Door County area high school students who joined with others all across Wisconsin and the US to demand common sense gun reform from their elected officials.  What gives us great hope was observing these students join with others all across Wisconsin and the US to demand common […]

  • Letter to the Editor: Support for Avenson

It is with great enthusiasm that I am writing in support of Kelly Avenson’s bid to become Sturgeon Bay’s next Alderperson in District 4. Kelly is an entrepreneur who has started and continues to operate two businesses in Sturgeon Bay. She is a tireless community builder, a quality that is reflected in her service as […]

  • Letter to the Editor: Avenson for Alderwoman

I am writing to share my support for Kelly Avenson, who is running for Sturgeon Bay’s City Council in the coming Spring election. District 4 has the opportunity to elect a local official who is assessable, sensible, professional, and ready for this position in every way. That Kelly has set her sights on and invested […]

  • Letter to the Editor: My Question Is Why?

How is it that a lobbying group of almost five million members, the NRA, can hold our nation of 325 million people hostage? Is it because we have a majority of spineless, self-serving elected officials throughout our government? Survey after survey tells us that the majority (84-90 percent) of the country wants reasonable and comprehensive […]

  • Letter to the Editor: Open Meetings Law and Public Comment Opportunities

The Wisconsin State Statutes Chapter 19, Subchapter V, Sec 19.81 provides guidance on the Open Meetings of Governmental Bodies. It provides declaration of the policy, history, definitions, and procedures. A governmental body can hold an open session meeting only if it has been properly posted in accordance with the state statutes. Chapter 19, sadly does […]

  • Letter to the Editor: The Time Is Now

We have the power and the tools to transform the suffering of the parents that have lost their children to gun violence; we have the power to stop the senseless killing with guns thought out our country. Our countrymen are dying not because they have to but because we allow it and the decisions each […]

  • Letter to the Editor: Many Questions to Consider

With President Trump and many others calling for teachers to carry guns in schools, it is interesting to think about what an actual proposal to this end might look like. The following are some things that such a proposal would need to address. Would it be mandatory or optional for teachers to carry guns? If […]

  • Letter to the Editor: Great Service from Herlache Small Engine

All too often letters to the editor reflect criticism or negative opinions. I would like to give credit to a local business which cheerfully provides excellent service. A while back we had a significant snowstorm and at the same time I experienced a problem with my snowblower. My drive is long and we had to […]

  • Letter to the Editor: Protect Our Elections!

The United States is under attack by Russian operatives who meddled in the 2016 elections in at least seven states and is continuing to meddle with our elections today. What has the President of the United States done about it? Nothing! This brazen assault on our U.S. democracy goes unpunished! We can forget all the […]

  • Letter to the Editor: Universal Background Checks for Gun Purchases

When I force myself to think about the recent Stoneman Douglas High School shooting in Florida, when I think any of those people could have been my children or grandchildren, I get angry. I get angry because those deaths were preventable through an up-to-date universal background check system for all gun sales.   Universal background […]

  • Letter to the Editor: Orange Avenger

Mr. President, You’ve done it again! (And might I add, Sir, “brilliantly?”) You’ve changed the subject from the depressing (How does the country move forward in the aftermath of another deadly school shooting without NRA approval?) to the truly inspiring – your solutions to improving school safety and thwarting mentally deranged criminals. One involves an […]

  • Letter to the Editor: No Pistol-packing Pedagogists

Let’s put a preposterous idea to rest before it becomes a serious consideration in the Congress of the United States. If teachers wanted to carry guns they could have become cops or security guards or joined the military. While I respect the skill and training required of the aforementioned and the important work they do, […]

  • Letter to the Editor: End Animal Abuse in Circuses

In January 2017, Ringling Bros. Barnum & Bailey Circus decided to fold up its tents and end animal cruelty. Unfortunately, there are still smaller circuses around; and one of those, the Carden Shrine Circus was in Green Bay this past weekend. It looks like so much fun with acrobats in sparkly costumes, silly clowns in […]

  • Letter to the Editor: A Sad Day for Local Government

I am writing to share the thoughts I sent to the following City of Sturgeon Bay officials:  Dear Mayor Birmingham, Fire Chief Dietman, Police Chief Porter, City Attorney Nesbitt, Community Development Director Olejniczak, City Engineer Shefchik, City Administrator VanLieshout, and Alderpersons Ms. Catarozoli, Mr. Vandertie, Mr. Ward, Mr. Wiesner, Ms. Allmann, Mr. Fett, and Ms. […]

  • Letter to the Editor: See the Exhibit, Read the Book!

If you have not already seen the exhibit of paintings by DarRen Morris at the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship in north Ephraim, I urge you to do so before it closes March 25. Morris is an untrained (“naïve” or “outsider”) artist who was sentenced to life without parole in 1994 when he was 17. Having shown […]

  • Letter to the Editor: Small-Government Solution to Global Warming

It’s always great to hear about communities and states working to fight climate change and promote clean energy, but the worldwide scientific community has made it clear that local/state/regional efforts will be far too little far too late to prevent “catastrophic” climate change (National Academy of Sciences/IPCC). We’ll need national legislation with a global impact […]

  • Letter to the Editor: Uncommon Sense

For all their talk of common sense, I don’t see much coming out of the gun control camp. It’s almost as if the persons calling for gun control have never owned or used a gun. And they’ve certainly never considered that a gun owner could feel deeply for the children and families of tragedy and […]

  • Letter to the Editor: Drop the Nonpartisan Label

A spokesperson for the League of Women Voters of Wisconsin submitted an opinion piece in the Feb. 16-23 issue of the Pulse. Which is fine. But it was followed by the stock editor’s note that the LWV of Wis. is “a nonpartisan organization that advocates for informed and active participation in government.” This may have […]
