  • Letter to the Editor: Polluted Waters Hurt Tourism

Almost everyone agrees that Door County’s economy is dependent on tourism, and that tourism is reliant on clean water. I believe that we are now facing a potential environmental crisis, that could soon become an economic one for Door County. The Bay of Green Bay is being polluted by record amounts of phosphorus. Phosphorus (P04) […]

  • Letter to the Editor: Gallagher Campaigning Already?

While I am aware that the main goal of most members of Congress is to be reelected, I was still surprised by recent mailings from Michael Gallagher. You know how they look:  oversized glossy colorful cards with photos of the “candidate” in community settings. These recent cards inform me that if I need help with […]

  • Hauser, Allmann, Catarozoli On Why They Have Skipped Granary Special Meetings

Sturgeon Bay Alderpersons Barb Allmann, Kelly Catarozoli and Laurel Hauser issued the following statement Monday regarding their refusal to vote on awarding a contract to tear down the Teweles & Brandeis Grain Elevator on the city’s west waterfront. Mayor Thad Birmingham called a fourth special meeting to vote on the matter for Monday, Jan. 8 […]

  • Letter to the Editor: More Positives from 2017

In response to Glenna Peters December 22nd letter “Some Positives from the Year,” I submit to you these positives for 2017 that were overlooked: ISIS has lost over 95 percent of it’s territory and is shambles Unemployment is the lowest it has been in 10 years at 4.1 percent. The DOW is up over 25 […]

  • Letter to the Editor: Thanks for Supporting 2017 Red Kettle Campaign

Sending a huge thank-you to all the dedicated folks who supported The Salvation Army’s Red Kettle Campaign this year! Thank you to the ringers who gave of their time and braved the weather. Thank you to the stores that hosted the ringers at their front doors. Thank you to all the donors for their generous […]

  • Letter to the Editor: The War on Christmas Has Been Won

Mr. President: I want to thank you for giving us Christmas back again! As you so astutely pointed out in your weekly declaration from the real White House, Mar-a-Lago, the other day, you have won the War on Christmas – apparently, with a daring rescue that freed Santa Claus from Guantanamo Bay and his reindeer […]

  • Letter to the Editor: Saddened by Book World Closures

I was saddened to see Book World going out of business. When up in Door County I spend way too much time (and money) in bookstores. While the area has numerous wonderful used bookstores, Peninsula Bookman, William Caxton Books, etc., if you wanted to check out the latest bestsellers Book World was it, not to […]

  • Letter to the Editor: More Careful Consideration Needed

I am opposed to destroying the granary on the west side of Sturgeon Bay. To me that is a magnificent monument to not only Sturgeon Bay’s past but Door County’s past as well. If licensed engineers can demonstrate that the granary is structurally sound and can handle repurposing, then I am convinced the “new granary” […]

  • Letter to the Editor: Unhinged or Worse?

I read the following quotation from Donald Trump’s New York Times interview with something like horror:  “I have absolute right to do what I want to do with the Justice Department,” he said. The whole interview is more like a nightmare where you imagine yourself in a public place spouting derogatory, egotistical nonsense and you […]

  • Letter to the Editor: Thanks for Supporting Children & Families

The late summer and fall have seen a series of fundraisers to benefit the young children and families of Northern Door Children’s Center. First was our call out for help with increasing our scholarship dollars. This was followed by a Renard’s Cheese and Pizza Sale, a spaghetti dinner, our annual poinsettia sale, and during Thanksgiving […]

  • Letter to the Editor: Save Our Democracy!

It is a proven fact that Russian officials tampered with many forms of social media and meddled in our 2016 presidential election. The U.S. President does not seem to care that our national security is at risk as this hostile foreign government continues to infiltrate America. More and more investigations show Trump campaign officials were […]

  • Letter to the Editor: Not Here, Not Now, Not Ever

Here comes the holidays again. That usually means more driving, shopping, cleaning and cooking. We expect to have our car start up in the cold, our credit accepted, and clean water to come out of our faucets. When any of these necessities are no longer available it will create pain, anxiety and havoc in our […]

  • Letter to the Editor: They Should Be Ashamed

The other day, I was watching the news on TV. A Congressional hearing was on and a Congressman was grilling the FBI Director, Christopher Wray, about the political affiliation of various staff members of the FBI. It reminded me of the Joseph McCarthy hearings in 1954. It made me think about the potential Gabriel Hearings […]

  • Letter to the Editor: I’ve Thad Enough

Mayor Birmingham:  I must confess that I don’t really know you. I know who you are, of course, but I have no idea what you are like. Are you a good guy, a great family man, a helpful neighbor? If so, I have never seen that side of you in the months (make that years) […]

  • Letter to the Editor: The Granary and Historic Preservation

History is all around us and presents itself in many ways. Our town and families include components of a variety of history. The more variety, the richer we are as individuals and community, and historic preservation is known to draw visitors. The county and Sturgeon Bay market our museums, which collect and preserve objects of […]

  • Letter to the Editor: Better Angels

For the past year the “powers that be” have been telling us that America is not great and that only they can make us “great” again. The way I see it, it’s just the opposite. They are the ones not so great. Somewhere along the way the people in charge have lost their moral compass […]

  • Letter to the Editor: What About America’s Dairyland?

Editor’s note:  In November, Rep. Scott Allen, R-Waukesha, proposed a bill that a state art education association conduct a design contest for high school students to come up with a new state slogan and license plate. Wisconsin IS America’s Dairyland. We produce a lot of milk, butter and assorted dairy products. We produce more cheese, […]

  • Letter to the Editor: Thanks for Supporting Neighbor to Neighbor

During the holiday season, when we are focused on kindness, love of our fellow man, and gratitude, we want to take the time to thank those who helped make the Neighbor to Neighbor 2017 Rib Fest a great success. First of all, we would like to thank the chefs: Casey’s BBQ & Smokehouse (who has […]

  • Letter to the Editor: Remembering Bob Schmidt

This time of year finds snowmobilers getting their sleds ready for riding. I cannot help but remembering Bob Schmidt as I do this. For years Bob was the leader and organizer of the MS Ride, a cross-country snowmobile ride to raise money for the MS Society. I was fortunate enough to be invited on many […]

  • Letter to the Editor: Some Positives from the Year

As I reflect on our country and our democracy, I find there are some positive things that have come out of this grim and disturbing first year of Trump’s presidency. Here are some hopeful events to keep in mind. The latest polls show that Donald Trump has an incredibly low approval rating of 32 percent. […]
