  • Letter to the Editor: Always A Sad Goodbye When Dr. Roger Kuhns Leaves Town

It was with a heavy heart that I bid farewell to Roger after Wednesday night’s talk (April 27) at Björklunden, sponsored by the Climate Change Coalition of Door County (CCCDC). It is an unfortunate “twist of fate” that he has been forced to leave his beloved county for work reasons, when his expertise is […]

  • Letter to the Editor: Just Say No to Neonics

I must comment on “The Changing Landscape of Orchard Management” feature in the recent Sustainability Issue. The article describes the severe challenges posed by aggressive alien insects to the production of marketable fruits. “Finding the balance that will keep the orchards profitable while maintaining a healthy environment” will be especially difficult if one of the […]

  • Letter to the Editor: Gibraltar Job Fair Success

Thank you to the 30 employers representing 38 businesses that attended the Gibraltar Job Fair on Thursday, April 28. The event was a win-win for both students and employers. We look forward to hosting the event again next year based on the feedback from our participants. And a special shout out to our DECA hosts […]

  • Letter to the Editor: Anyone Notice Two Russell Feingolds?

It would be difficult not to notice that there is a Feingold running for the U.S. Senate as the airways are collapsing under the weight of Feingold commercials breathlessly announcing that he has a plan to keep America safe; that he will, if necessary, singlehandedly repel all evildoers from our shores and do all sorts […]

  • Letter to the Editor: Kitten Season Is Here Again

Do not immediately assume that a litter of kittens found without a mama cat nearby has been abandoned. Mama may be hunting, if feral, or simply going back home to get something to eat and drink. If you do determine that the kittens have somehow lost their mom, and you realize that they are […]

  • Letter to the Editor: Respect Boundaries

Dear trespasser, I saw you eating lunch, taking a break from your bike ride, in a place you shouldn’t be. You are right, the view is beautiful from this private country lane. I heard your car come down the winding driveway, inching further and further past the trees and my sleeping dog, until you could […]

  • Letter to the Editor: Political Flatus

Immediately after Outagamie County Executive Tom Nelson announced his candidacy for Representative 8th District, Pat Garrett, Wisconsin GOP spokesman, took off the gloves and attacked Nelson’s character with the following tirade [in a statement from the Republican Party of Wisconsin]: “Over the course of his political career, Nelson has promoted the radical left-wing agenda, growing […]

  • Letter to the Editor: To My Supporters

First of all, I want you to know how very dear, how very precious you all are to me, those of you I have known for years and those of you who are new friends. The greatest pleasure of this campaign, and there have been many, was walking door to door with my walking companions, […]

  • Letter to the Editor: Sturgeon Bay Needs a Fourth Bridge

Yes, the City of Sturgeon Bay needs a fourth bridge, a bridge to unite a divided city. Though Thad Birmingham retains his position as Mayor, challenger Laurel Brooks lost by a very narrow margin of 52 votes with the final count of 1,894 to 1,842. Voters responded with a clear message that there needs to […]

  • Letter to the Editor: Ted Cruz Is Scary

The claims made by Ted Cruz that he is a religious conservative constitutionalist are not what we think of as American in this day and age. He does not want to accept all people as equal, as it states in the Constitution. The first amendment to the Constitution separates church and state and mandates that […]

  • Letter to the Editor: New Reality of Sturgeon Bay Politics

An apocryphal bit of advice that famed Packers coach Vince Lombardi gave to one of his players went something like this: “When you go into the end zone, act like you’ve been there before.” Based upon the reactions that I have been reading in the blogosphere following the recent mayoral and city council elections, this […]

  • Letter to the Editor: State of Our Environment

As April 22, 2016, Earth Day, approaches one has to wonder how our state is faring in aspiring to unite, appreciate and respect our environment. We should all be mindful and cognizant of what the legislators and the governor are doing with our natural resources. Since January they have pushed though many bills that are […]

  • Letter to the Editor: Thank You to the Community

Northern Door Children’s Center (NDCC) is deeply grateful to everyone who helped us make our 2016 Super Bowl-A-Thon fundraising event on Saturday, April 2, so successful. First and foremost, thanks a million to Penny Anschutz and the amazing staff of the Sister Bay Bowl for hosting us. We couldn’t do it without you! We are […]

  • Letter to the Editor: The Party I Will Not Vote For

During this presidential campaign we have heard the candidates state their goals. We have heard abolish Obamacare, abolish the EPA, build a wall, rebuild the middle class, make college tuition free and others, all of which can only be accomplished if a supportive Congress is in place. Given the uncertainty of voting for what has […]

  • Letter to the Editor: Sturgeon Bay Is Moving Forward

I have noticed a few letters coming from people outside of Sturgeon Bay about how Sturgeon Bay should be run and what should not be built there. Recently there was one saying Mayor Thad Birmingham would not respond to his emails about what he wanted in Sturgeon Bay and how he felt about certain issue. […]

  • Letter to the Editor: To the Residents of Sister Bay

An election is coming up on Tuesday, April 5th. There are multiple people running for village trustee for the Sister Bay Village Board. I’m writing this to encourage to vote for Denise Bhirdo. Speaking from personal experience, I have worked with Denise when I was on the village board for 16 years and she was […]

  • Letter to the Editor: Vote for Laurel Brooks

A vote for Laurel Brooks for Mayor of Sturgeon Bay is a vote for better local government. Laurel Brooks is experienced, intelligent, and passionate and will be a great Mayor and spokesperson for the City of Sturgeon Bay. It is long past time that the “good old boys” are thrown out of office here in […]

  • Letter to the Editor: The Ephraim Business Council’s Stance on Selling Beer and Wine

The Ephraim Business Council (EBC) recently completed a survey of its members addressing the interest of allowing the sale of beer and wine in Ephraim. In total, 73 of the 100 EBC members participated in the survey and from those 74.65 percent believe that the sale of beer and wine in Ephraim should be allowed. […]

  • Letter to the Editor: Vote Yes for Sturgeon Bay School District Referendum

In 1993, the State of Wisconsin implemented revenue caps on public school districts. As a result, for the past 23 years school districts in this state have needed voter approval to exceed the state mandated limits on funding. During this time, over 300 school districts (about 75 percent of all districts in Wisconsin) have run […]

  • Letter to the Editor: Every Voice Matters

Laurel Brooks wears a genuine smile, warmly engages people in two-way communication, believes wholeheartedly that everyone’s voice truly does matter, all should be respected and treated equally, and fairness in government is possible. She is thoughtfully prepared to lead our city as its new Mayor. Having had the privilege of canvassing with her, attending her […]
