  • Letter to the Editor: In Praise of Water-Pollution Credits

I am writing to compliment reporter Jackson Parr on his very well-written article in the March 29th Peninsula Pulse about a newly proposed state water pollution credit clearinghouse. This is a tough topic to describe in a way that makes it understandable to the reader. I think Mr. Parr did exactly that. The concept is […]

  • Letter to the Editor: Questions for All the Door County Illinois Transplants

You probably left Illinois because of high taxes, a corrupt State Administration and certainly a corrupt Chicago Administration to come and live in Door County. Your dollar goes a lot farther here than where you were living, the scenery is beautiful, the art scene is inspiring. You evidently love it here, so why did you […]

  • Letter to the Editor: Name Fear to Overcome Incivility

In response to Mr. Krueger’s assertion that civil discourse is impossible in the atmosphere of hate propagated by news networks, All news networks (including those Mr. Krueger leaves unnamed) profit from connections to centers of political power. Political power is founded on offering relief to the fears of the governed. It serves those in power […]

  • Letter to the Editor: Voice Your Opinion on Cannabis

It’s time to ask the question. Communities all over the country are letting citizens weigh in on the subject at the ballot box. Yes or no on cannabis? Is it medicine? Should adults be able to use it recreationally? Everyone who lives in the City of Sturgeon Bay can voice their opinion on the subject […]

  • Letter to the Editor: Regarding ‘In Search of Civility’ by Susan McAninch

She dances around the subject of anger and anxiety when addressing the question “why are political disagreements becoming increasingly harmful?” I can answer that question with one word “HATE”. All of us, including Susan McAninch, if she watches CNN, MSNBC, CBS etc., have been subjected to raw visceral hate like a stream of vomit splashing […]

  • Letter to the Editor: Farewell, Shopko

I was so very sad to read the article about the closing of ShopKo. Having that sweet little store right in Sister Bay saved me countless trips to Sturgeon Bay for all those little things that you need from time to time. Whether it was OTC medications, hair products, dog food, paper products, a new […]

  • Letter to the Editor: Cannabis Referenda in Sturgeon Bay

On April 2nd, will also be a non-binding referendum to gauge Sturgeon Bay’s opinion regarding the issue of cannabis. This past November, a majority of Wisconsin residents cast votes regarding medical and/or recreational use. In Sturgeon Bay, our ballot is purely advisory. There are two questions. The first asks our opinion about legalizing medicinal cannabis. […]

  • Letter to the Editor: Door County Not So Dog-Friendly After All?

I must respectfully disagree [with your March 15-22 “Hot Diggity Dog!” article regarding Expedia’s ranking of the county as a top dog-friendly place]. We just recently moved up from Iowa and brought our Bernese Mountain dog with us and have found Door County to be one of the most dog unfriendly places we’ve ever lived. […]

  • Letter to the Editor: Vote for Laurel Hauser

Laurel and I crossed paths over 12 years ago when I was mayor of Sturgeon Bay from 2007 through 2010. She dedicated much time and effort while serving on the city planning commission. I believe her focus was and will continue to be a person that rolls up her sleeves and gets the work done. […]

  • Letter to the Editor: Support Sturgeon Bay School District

I am writing this as an individual who at one time did not believe in voting for school referenda. As a matter of fact, I may have been somewhat outspoken about it. But that was B.K. (Before Kids). A long time ago, a very wise person once told me, “You can be ready for marriage, […]

  • Letter to the Editor: In Support of David Ward

I urge the citizens of Sturgeon Bay to vote for David Ward for mayor. His educational, business, and administrative experience make him most qualified to run this city. Having lived here for 18 years he knows how to get things done and effect changes, if needed. Most important, Dave LISTENS. As a City Council member […]

  • Letter to the Editor: Vote for Brian Hagedorn

Judge Brian Hagedorn is being attacked in negative, nasty ads being run by an outside group. He is accused of receiving money from a “hate group.” That would be the $3,000 Alliance Defense Fund paid him for three speeches. And why is Alliance Defense Fund a hate group? Because Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC) says […]

  • Letter to the Editor: Not a Fan of the Housing Study

The the long awaited housing study was unveiled—Where was the report hidden before being ‘unveiled’? Maybe cleverly hidden behind East Town Mall, Green Bay? The Door County Economic Development Corporation released the study. The Executive Director said, “The result have been startling.” Really? Wow. This is reminiscent of the movie Casablanca, when the Nazis tell […]

  • Letter to the Editor: County Needs Expanded Veterinary Clinic Hours

Dogs may love Door County, as asserted in the March 15-22 Pulse issue, but pet owners from outside Door County should be aware that if they have a dog emergency after regular local veterinary clinic business hours or on weekends, they likely will have to take their pet to an emergency veterinary clinic in Green […]

  • Letter to the Editor: A New Day is Here

Sturgeon Bay had been living under the dark cloud of behind closed-door meeting. Sometimes with members over looking unethical and even illegal behavior. There are gaggles of people in this community who still think it is OK to act like that. Their bullying performances in those meetings and outside even went to the extent that […]

  • Letter to the Editor: School Board Candidate Echoing Trump?

Brett Reetz is running for Gibraltar school board. His slogan is “Return to Excellence.” Sounding an awful lot like Make America Great Again, it is an interesting dog whistle that should raise questions in voters’ minds. Among those is Brett’s attitude toward qualifications of the teaching staff. One should question how Mr. Reetz would address […]

  • Letter to the Editor: Fairchild for Leadership That Values Teamwork, Cooperation

I am excited to vote for Shawn Fairchild for Mayor, because our city needs new leadership that values public input, is open to fresh ideas, and believes in the importance of cooperation. As someone who has coached youth and adult sports, and worked as a department supervisor at Palmer Johnson, he understands that the best […]

  • Letter to the Editor: Rep. Gallagher Votes Against Democracy

I believe it is very important that residents of Wisconsin Congressional District #8 (many of whom are readers of this newspaper) know that our Republican Congressman, Mike Gallagher, who claims to have the interests of his constituents and the nation at heart, doesn’t actually act as if he did. Mr. Gallagher recently voted against HR1, […]

  • Letter to the Editor: Shawn Fairchild Will Be Kind, Thoughtful, Wise Mayor

I have known Shawn for a few years – as a experienced craftsman, as an effective advocate for the public good, and as a friend. I understand the traits that will make a terrific mayor. He is a long-time community member who knows every corner of the city, has experienced decades of change, and has […]

  • Letter to the Editor: In Support of Laurel Hauser

Hard-working, committed, conscientious, responsible, and fair-minded—these are some of the adjectives I would use to describe my candidate for District 7 Alderperson, Laurel Hauser. I have had the pleasure of knowing Laurel for several years and have seen her demonstrate these qualities countless times, whether it was leading a fund-raising effort for a new sound […]
