  • Gunny Sack of Carp

On occasional Sunday afternoons in the summer time, our family would drive the white Ford station wagon out to join in a picnic visit with our farm relatives. They lived about twenty-five miles west of town in what was called “German Valley.” The adults would spend the afternoons around the picnic tables in the backyard […]

  • The Stripper for Hong Kong

The Stripper for Hong Kong By Douglas Paul Landwehr The front door opened, then the door to the foyer. Since all our scheduled guests were in for the night, I was puzzled by this rare walk-in and went to see who it was.

  • Unk

Come in, come in, she called to us as I knocked on the mended combination screen door at the front porch. I opened it and with my wife trailing behind me, threaded my way along the path that remained between the stacks of stuffed plastic grocery bags stacked on both sides.

  • Judge’s Comments

    “Nice handling of tension.

  • Two Dolls at Auction

All Cathy could feel in the Buick’s passenger seat was gravel rattling underneath her across the car’s bottom, spitting up from the tires as they wove further and further from town: past the red brick school house, its empty playground, the plastic shopping bags clogging its meshed fence.

The kitchen is empty, the sound of my footsteps echo off the walls. Fifty-five years they’d lived in this house they’d built with sweat equity before the phrase was coined.   You need a wooden rolling pin, a sturdy one, and a pastry blender with a wooden grip.   They never updated the linoleum […]

  • Between Us

Between us whispers twist across the room like dust waltzing with the sun as it crawls over a wooden floor. This hand I hold is thin, soft, and used like a memory I do not want to remember. To when, yesterday, we lingered in a moment before the years and days and hours changed us. […]

  • Apprehension

A boy stuffs newspapers   into a bag on a front porch.   Remember this moment forever,   the boy challenges himself,   not for the quality of that moment,   but for the possibility of apprehending   the trajectory of his life                 then. […]

  • Judge’s Comments

“An astonishingly three-dimensional poem that succeeds in resurrecting the physical sensations of a moment from the distant past, allowing the reader to experience it too, with all five senses.

  • Coming in from the Snow at Dusk

My little one sits in the cold white tub while the water runs, and I’m remembering how it was as a kid, sitting there naked, shivering in the cold air and the light’s glare, staring at gushing streams of water hot enough to send clouds of steam storming all around the room. I remember the […]

  • Judge’s Comments

“With wry wit and a highly engaging manner of expression, this poem’s creator cheerfully confronts the reader with five philosophical questions – - all of which are (a) deeply thought-provoking, and (b) basically unanswerable.

  • Delicious

Since god expelled his first two students for learning, must we assume that ignorance is the only way to understand creation? I’d still want to know what rain wants when it falls, or what that fox— – the one lying dead by the side of the road –— wanted from the other side.

  • Judge’s Comments

“In a poem featuring a rhythmic grace that is almost dance-like in quality, this poem pays tribute, memorably, to the practitioners of a vanishing art – that of the mending of nets in winter by ‘summertime catchers of fish.

  • Weavers

(for the Hickey Brothers fishermen) They stand side by side in the low-ceilinged shack; two strong young men practicing an old man’s art. Net pulled to line, hold tight, over, around and through.

  • The Process: Enlightened

As a writer or photographer, you submit your work to the Pulse’s annual Hal Grutzmacher Writers’ Exposé and Photography Jubilee, hoping to be published, but do you know what happens to your work once it is submitted?
